Toroi Marine and Meditmin, winning projects of the new blue economy programme

The jury has awarded the best start-ups participating in the first edition of the support programme for new companies in the blue economy sector

Barcelona, 12 Jan 2023

The first edition of the programme has come to a close with the presentation of the awards to the two winning companies: Toroi Marine and Meditmin. The event served as the end of the programme, which supports innovative entrepreneurial projects that work within the framework of the blue economy.

The start-up Meditmin, focused on the production of a marine organic natural fertilizer for agriculture, has been awarded as the most sustainable company. The jury also awarded Toroi Marine as the most innovative company, thanks to a precision naval propulsion project, a solution to the automation of vessels in a safe and profitable way.

The first edition included 46 nominations, of which 16 projects were selected and finally 11 projects in the sector were able to develop and validate their own business models. For three months, the participating start-ups have received training, tutoring and mentoring, have participated in networking events and have been working in the programme's special coworking spaces, provided to them to work on their proposal.

The closing ceremony and the presentation of the awards was held in the Sala Barcelona of the World Trade Center and the two winning start-ups were awarded 10,000 Euros. During the event, first a technical committee selected the four finalist companies of the programme. Then, the chosen projects were presented in five minutes and the jury chose the winners.

This is a programme promoted by Barcelona City Council with the collaboration of the Port of Barcelona and Costa Cruises and also has the support of the UPC, Seastainable Ventures and the Nautical Cluster. The initiative is part of the municipal strategy for boosting the Blue Economy, a sector that integrates all the economic activities carried out in the water or that have to do with it.

In the coming months, a new edition of the programme will be launched. Consult all the information at this link.
