The project offers half-year employment contracts to people living in neighbourhoods with lower socio-economic indices

Barcelona, 09 Jun 2023

The new edition of the Comprehensive Hiring Projects (PICs) in priority neighbourhoods closed on 1st June with a total of 172 people hired. The programme offers the opportunity to work for 6 months in a protected hiring employment project to people living in neighbourhoods with lower socio-economic indices. The selected professionals have been assigned to 51 municipal projects of community interest focused on the environment and urban sustainability (60% of the places), social revitalisation (20%), the arrangement and maintenance of public facilities and spaces (9 %), ICT (8%) and the promotion of economic activity (3%).

The initiative is promoted by Barcelona Activa in coordination with different municipal areas, the districts throughout the city, the consortiums of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Natural Sciences and also with the Barcelona Sports Institute and the Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens. The agency is responsible for promoting and deploying the programme and tutoring the people hired and the collaborating organisations.

Beyond the tasks they will have to undertake, the hired people will follow a skills training pathway to have a better chance of finding work in the future. Therefore, the aim of the initiative is to ensure that the hiring of these professionals represents an opportunity for improvement both for the selected people and for the city.

The Comprehensive Hiring Projects in the priority neighbourhoods allow actions to be carried out in the 38 most vulnerable neighbourhoods of the city and prioritised for this action by hiring people resident in these same areas. An initiative aimed at the territories and groups that are most in need and that, at the same time, focuses on some of the priority activity sectors such as energy efficiency and the fight against the digital divide.
