New guides to help navigate the extraordinary regularisation process

Barcelona City Council, together with Barcelona Activa, has launched two new guides to support migrants and employers through the extraordinary regularisation process, providing practical information on administrative procedures, employment rights and available support services.

Barcelona, 14 Oct 2026

The extraordinary regularisation process can raise questions for both applicants and employers interested in hiring them. To address these concerns, two practical guides have been developed, explaining the steps involved, how to check the status of applications and what support is available to help people enter the labour market.

The guide for applicants explains how to track an application, which rights remain in place while it is being processed and what steps to take once an application has been approved. It also provides guidance on entering the labour market, renewing authorisations and administrative procedures involving the foreigner identification number (NIE), Social Security, the Public Employment Service of Catalonia (SOC) and the foreigner identity card (TIE).

The guide for employers provides essential information on hiring people undergoing the extraordinary regularisation process. It covers the required supporting documents, how to monitor the progress of applications and the resources available to help people enter employment.

In Barcelona, municipal support is primarily provided through the Service for Immigrants, Emigrants and Refugees (SAIER), which offers information, guidance and specialist advice on immigration and international protection.

The guides also outline the employment support services offered by Barcelona Activa and SAIER, including help with finding work, training and support for entering the labour market. Employers can also access talent management services and advice on available hiring grants and incentives.
