144 students from eleven programming training centres in Barcelona have proposed solutions to technological challenges linked to the SDGs

Barcelona, 21 Jun 2023

Barcelona Activa hosted the Tech4Good Hackathon at Cibernàrium 22@. Between 20th and 21st June, 144 students from the different code academies in Barcelona took part in the day organised together with the Mobile World Capital Foundation. The event, promoted under the title 'Developing solutions for a more sustainable world', also counted on the participation of leading companies in the city.

The aim of the Tech4Good Hackathon is to tackle one of the five challenges proposed by the organisation and based on the 2030 Agenda, using Barcelona City Council's open database platform Open Data BCN. The challenges are linked to the Sustainable Development Goals and were: the drought in the city of Barcelona, inclusive and quality education, the promotion of local commerce, sustainable tourism and the promotion of gender equality in public positions.

Through multidisciplinary working groups, the participants had to respond and propose solutions to one of the five challenges. The groups were made up of various programming specialists that included Data Science, Frontend and Backend teams, with specific tasks and goals for each discipline. Between all the members they had to find a creative, innovative and original solution to the challenge they decided to choose and, during the second day of work, present it to a jury.

Finally, the Hackathon jury chose the team that promoted the 'Des/via' project, a web page that decongests the most frequented areas of Barcelona with the aim of promoting sustainable tourism and helping the local economy. The members of the winning group received as a prize, tickets for the Mobile World Congress 2024 and for the Cruïlla 2023 festival and also a guided tour of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre.
