Barcelona promotes 3 projects in disused industrial warehouses in 22@ and Besòs

The City Council has presented the partners who will manage the spaces to turn them into new hubs of innovation, talent attraction and investments

Barcelona, 16 Feb 2023

Barcelona City Council has announced the strategic partners who will be in charge of reviving three industrial warehouses in 22@ and Besòs to develop hubs for innovation, attracting talent and investments. The council has presented the companies that will manage the new premises to transform them into industrial hubs relating to strategic sectors such as the circular economy, creative industries and urban innovation.

In a press conference, the third Deputy Mayor, Laia Bonet, and the Managing director of Barcelona Activa, Félix Ortega, announced the winning projects. They also explained that the initiative is an example of public-private partnerships for the economic development of the city's neighbourhoods and districts. All the projects form part of the goals of the Barcelona Green Deal agenda.

The Mondragon corporation will manage the building on carrer Ciutat d'Asunción, a 3,300 square metre space on the Besòs axis that will specialise in Industry 4.0 and the circular economy. It will launch the "Barcelona Circular Hub", a project focused on promoting entrepreneurial projects and training, and outreach activities in the sector.

Warehouse E of Palo Alto, which will have more than 2,000 square metres, will become a hub for Creative Industries under the management of the Palo Alto BCN XRLAB joint venture. The conglomerate is made up of the companies Ingenia Cultura, Arsmediatech and Lavinia and will have a space to experiment with new audiovisual technologies.

The third building is located at Carrer Ávila del 22@ and will have 1,300 square metres aimed at boosting urban innovation, the smart city and the energy transition. The project that will be installed there is the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), which will create Barcelona Urban Tech and host open innovation companies, entrepreneurial projects and experimental laboratories.
