Barcelona accompanies more than 15,000 young people in their job search

The Youth Employment Working Group takes stock of the plan designed to respond to the serious employment and economic situation of the city’s youth, aggravated by the pandemic

Barcelona, 10 Mar 2022

Barcelona City Council, together with Barcelona Activa, is continuing to work on the 2020-23 Youth Employment Promotion Plan. This is an initiative to foster the incorporation of young people from the city into the labour market. The precariousness of the youth labour market prior to the pandemic was already a determining factor for people when finding work.

The plan, which was launched in 2020, counts on a budget of 12.9 million Euros and aims to provide support to Barcelona's youth talent and reduce unemployment among working-age youth. A milestone that is developed through 4 areas of action such as: advice, guidance and support; training and skills-acquisition; fostering decent hiring, entrepreneurship and maintaining activity; and attention for young people in situations of vulnerability.

According to figures from the Observatory of Companies and Employment, the unemployment rate for people aged 16 to 24 has gone from 43.2% to 22.3%, reducing unemployment by 48.4%. Barcelona Activa accompanied 15,324 people under the age of 30 during 2021, young people in a situation of unemployment in the city who were suffering from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. In addition, during this period, youth unemployment in the city fell by 54.4% to the current 6,773 young people.
