Barcelona, 23 Sep 2022

Science, technology, innovation and talent. The first ‘Barcelona Deep Tech Summit’ Congress  brought together the scientific and technological community to discuss the future of the deep tech sector in the city and internationally. The congress, held on 22nd September at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm, had roundtables and debates in which forty speakers participated.

Around 500 national and international participants and prominent companies attended the congress, in which talks were given on health, urban mobility, artificial intelligence or NewSpace. The debate spaces were made up of experts such as José María Siota, Laia Arnal, Ariadna Farres, Alba Cervera, Pierre Louis Xech, Adrià Recasens, and Heriberto Saldivar, among others.

Barcelona City Council took advantage of the holding of the trade fair to announce that it will open a new fund for the growth of deep tech start-ups that could reach 30 million Euros of public-private investment. The municipal government considers that the deep tech sector has great potential and can generate a major impact on the lives of citizens.

In addition to the municipal presence of the First Deputy Mayor, Jaume Collboni, and the Managing Director of Barcelona Activa, Félix Ortega, the congress counted on the institutional presence of, among others, the rectors of Catalan universities (UB, UAB, UPC, UPF, UOC). Also taking part was the Minister of Science and Innovation from the Spanish Government, Diana Morant, who highlighted the potential of the city: “Barcelona is the co-cultural and scientific capital of Spain, the city with the most scientific production in our state and the eighth in Europe”.

The Barcelona Deep Tech Summit fair ended with the awarding of the prize for the innovative start-up with the greatest potential for growth: Qilimanjaro, a project dedicated to quantum technology.
