A new cycle of virtual conferences which address women’s leadership in strategic sectors begins

Throughout the 7 conferences, challenges and opportunities in the current economic context will be discussed

Barcelona, 21 Jan 2021

Wednesday 20th January saw the launching of the cycle of virtual conferences Female leadership in strategic economic sectors during the pandemic, which will continue throughout the first quarter of 2021. Over the following six sessions - which will be broadcasted virtually - the sectors most affected by the pandemic will be analysed, namely: commerce, tourism, the digital and technological economy, care work and services to individuals, health and nutrition, and the cultural and creative industries.

In the first session, titled ‘Women in economic sectors of Barcelona in the Covid era’, it was made clear that the pandemic has hit the city’s economy hard; among the groups most affected are women, who had already been experiencing considerable social and gender inequalities long before the start of the health crisis.

In the words of the First Deputy Mayor Jaume Collboni: “One of the future challenges is to fight against inequality regarding wage and gender in the labour market, and to do so, it is absolutely necessary to promote women’s talent.” In this sense, it has been confirmed that policies are already being implemented in terms of reactivation by offering training in strategic sectors via the IT Academy and the Lidera programme.

While in the current context, sectors like commerce and tourism have been drastically affected by the pandemic, the amount of job positions in the ICT sector have been growing, thus encouraging the incorporation of women in this sector as a key challenge from now on. In parallel, the bio-health sector has maintained stable employment, and it is anticipated that the social value of jobs involving care work and health will increase in the near future.
