Barcelona, 10 Mar 2021

Young people are one of the groups that have been most affected by the pandemic in the city. Currently the youth unemployment rate is 29.9%. That’s why Barcelona City Council has presented the new Plan for Fostering Youth Employment in Barcelona, which counts on a municipal budget of 12 million Euros and includes a package of complementary measures to provide support and training to young people who need it most, with a commitment towards digitalisation and training in strategic sectors that offer more job opportunities.

"The priority is to have young people trained and prepared, but there need to be companies that hire. Within the framework of the Plan, we are reinforcing entrepreneurship and the employment plans in the city,” said Raquel Gil, the Commissioner for the Promotion of Employment and Policies against Precariousness. For this same reason, the plan focuses on 4 areas of action: Coaching and guidance; Training in digitalisation, languages and emerging sectors; Promotion of hiring and entrepreneurship; and Attention to young people in vulnerable and precarious situations.

Together with the Barcelona Green Deal, this new Plan is included in the actions promoted by Barcelona Activa and Barcelona City Council that aim to foster employment in the city. In the words of Jaume Collboni, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council, “the priority is to accelerate the way out of the crisis as soon as possible and to guarantee that all young people have opportunities for training and employment.”

Barcelona Activa has attended more than 7,000 young people in the set of employment programmes and services over the past year. For more information, contact our youth advisory service
