Barcelona promotes a new food model for the city

The City Council promotes the Sustainable Food Week to raise public awareness of more responsible consumption habits

Barcelona, 26 Oct 2021

Barcelona has just celebrated the Sustainable Food Citizen Week, between 14th and 24th October. A project promoted by the City Council with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of good sustainable food and stimulating debate and reflection. The initiative, in collaboration with the PEMB (The Metropolitan Strategic Plan of Barcelona) and local entities, has focused on understanding the relationship between eating habits and health, the climate crisis, social rights, politics and culture.

The week is part of the year of the World Capital of Sustainable Food, which is being celebrated this 2021. An initiative to consolidate projects to transform food systems and make them more sustainable, fair and healthy. The event has included talks, debates, conferences, shows and documentary cycles to reflect and debate on topics such as waste and exploitation, urban and rural links, the ecological footprint, food and social rights and many others.

Barcelona Activa has also collaborated with the Sustainable Food Capital with the launch of projects such as Impulsem el Que Fas (We boost what you do), grants for projects that foster responsible consumption and healthy food.  It has also promoted the programme Innofood, which promotes the creation of innovative companies in the food sector, Match Impulsa, focused on the digital acceleration of organisations with a responsible environmental impact, and Activa’t Fent Salut, (Get active being healthy) an aid plan for improving behavioural habits.
