Barcelona strengthens the sustainable blue economy sector

The City Council and the stakeholders of the ecosystem make a positive assessment of the measures and actions carried out in the last year to strengthen the maritime sector

Barcelona, 30 Sep 2022

One year after the approval  of the government measure for boosting the Blue Economy, Barcelona continues to work on a present and future project to become a more sustainable, equitable and competitive city. The commitment towards the blue economy arises in a climate emergency context, with the desire to strengthen a strategic economic sector. For this reason, Barcelona City Council has counted on the collaboration of an ecosystem of more than 70 stakeholders to advance the implementation of the strategy.

To make a balance of the first year since approving the measure, an event was held on 29th September to present the challenges achieved and to specify the objectives in progress. During the first 12 months of implementation of the Blue Economy Strategy, 81% of the goals fixed objectives have been achieved. For example, Barcelona Activa has launched projects to support entrepreneurship in the sector through the programme for blue economy projects, in which 15 start-ups will be accelerated with new business opportunities.

Among the various challenges, the hosting of major maritime and sporting events in the city, such as the 2024 America's Cup in Barcelona, one of the most important sporting competitions in the world, also stands out. There is also the attraction of more international organizations to Barcelona, such as the World Ocean Council (WOC) and the Sustainable Oceans Summit (SOS), a benchmark event on oceans, economy and sustainability.
